A friend of mine introduced me to the Hilly Hundred Weekend in 1983, and that really started my lifelong passion for the sport. The next year I upgraded my bicycle, and started logging my riding miles. In 1987 my wife, C., who was still recovering from breast cancer treatments, volunteered at the Hilly. The next year she was on her bike riding the Hilly Hundred. A few years later we purchased our first tandem, and she has enjoyed most Hillys since then as stoker. Our daughter, Elena, a Purdue grad, rode on the tandem when my wife couldn’t attend, at age fifteen. Our son, J., an IU grad has ridden a couple of Saturday Hillys with me on our own bikes, then letting me enjoy the Sunday ride with my wife on the tandem.
The Hilly Hundred is an annual family event for us, and is the weekend we look forward to all year. Even when the kids don’t ride, they meet us in Bloomington for dinner and the Hilly atmosphere. 2012 was my 30th consecutive Hilly Hundred, and Hilly #22 for Cece! We enjoy the support we give to both of our kids with our IU/PU jerseys we like to wear on the tandem.
Long live the Hilly, the number one bicycle event in the midwest!
