The Giant Escape and Liv Alight (women’s) bicycle models are popular with our staff for both their value and versatility. The Escape and Liv Alight (Giant introduced the Liv women’s line in 2013) are flat bar fitness bikes that combine the lightweight wheels and drivetrain of a road bike with a more upright riding posture on flat handlebars. With the rider still leaning forward slightly to use both arms and legs for absorbing bumps, the fitness bike is lighter than a hybrid bike, which smooths the ride with wider tires, shock absorbers and wide saddles.
Fitness bikes are very popular due to their suitability for so many different riding styles; casual round-town riding, social group rides, fitness riding, or bicycle commuting.
The Giant Escape 3 / Liv Alight 3 ($359) features an aluminum frame built with bicycle-specific hydro formed tubes and a steel fork. A Shimano 21-speed drivetrain offers wide-range gearing suitable for the hilliest terrain. The alloy wheels feature 700×32 tires that are easy rolling on the road and sure-footed on your favorite crushed stone trail. There is plenty of clearance and fittings for adding a rack and fenders, a handy addition if you plan on commuting, or just want to carry a picnic to your favorite park.
The Giant Escape 1 / Liv Alight 1 ($659) starts with the same aluminum frame as the Escape 3, and adds a composite fork to dampen road vibration and reduce weight. Other upgrades include a Shimano 27-speed drivetrain with Altus shifters and gel comfort grips. Another nice upgrade are the Giant S-X2 Flat puncture resistant tires.
And if you are looking for a dedicated city/commuter bike, the Escape/Alight are available in a City model ($579) with rack and fenders already installed.
